Kortrijk tests 'protective jacket' for trees during work, with a chip that reports when the trunk is hit

Kortrijk is testing 'CircullariTree', a new system designed to protect trees on construction sites using a chip that alerts when the trunk is impacted. Mature city trees can be valued at around 25,000 euros, yet they often suffer unnoticed damage during construction, leading to potential death later. The initiative, supported by local innovation agencies, aims to balance tree protection with contractor operations. The system includes protective jackets that can shield the trunk, roots, and crown, and damage can be monitored via an app. The first prototype is showcased at the Wonder Festival until November 8, with hopes for broader implementation in Flanders.
