KSH: The number of births decreased by five percent in September

In September 2026, Hungary recorded 5,893 births, a decrease of 4.8% compared to the previous year. Deaths totaled 8,788, reflecting a 1.9% decline. The natural decrease was 2,895, up from 2,765 the previous year. Marriages also fell significantly, with 5,148 couples tying the knot, an 18% drop. From January to September 2026, there were 52,429 births, down 3.5%, while the fertility rate was estimated at 1.29. Deaths during this period were 90,614, a 2% decrease, resulting in a nearly unchanged natural decrease of 38,185. Births declined in four regions, with Budapest seeing the largest drop, while Northern Great Plain experienced growth. Over the twelve months from October 2025 to September 2026, there were 70,095 births, a 4.8% decrease, and 122,317 deaths, a 2.9% decline, with marriage numbers stable at 45,728.
