Farmers in Norway now feed salmon chicken scraps: "Good example of circular economy"

Norwegian salmon producers like Lerøy Seafood Group and Mowi will now feed their fish with chicken by-products due to rising fishmeal costs. This shift is seen as a positive example of circular economy by aquaculture expert Patrick Sorgeloos. Salmon currently consumes fishmeal and oil, but with fish catches plateauing, sustainable alternatives are necessary. Chicken by-products, which include parts not suitable for human consumption, are being considered. However, Sorgeloos emphasizes the importance of ensuring these animal nutrients are free from pathogens and contaminants. Consumer concerns about the new diet are acknowledged, but Sorgeloos reassures that salmon will not be raised specifically for this purpose, and other sustainable options like insect meal are also viable.
