The Nuclear Safety Authority sees no obstacle, for the time being, to the continued operation of reactors beyond 60 years

The French nuclear reactors operated by EDF may potentially function safely beyond 60 years, possibly up to 80 years. The Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) requested EDF to investigate this issue in 2022. Currently, the 57 operational reactors, mainly built in the 1980s, are under 50 years old. ASN's recent draft opinion indicates no identified obstacles to extending their operation, although EDF must address several technical issues to ensure safety and demonstrate compliance during future assessments.
