The Austrian Josef Hofer, a major figure in asylum art, has died
Austrian artist Josef Hofer passed away on October 23 due to a lung infection at the age of 81. He was known for his contributions to outsider art, facing challenges such as hearing loss and cognitive issues. Born on March 17, 1945, in Wegscheid, Bavaria, he was hidden by his parents during the Nazi regime due to his disabilities. Hofer lived in isolation in Upper Austria, lacking access to education and healthcare, which worsened his condition. Despite the end of the Third Reich, he remained secluded, with only his mother and cats providing companionship.
