The impunity for journalist murders is on the rise, a first since 2012, according to Unesco

UNESCO reports a rise in journalist murder impunity for the first time since 2012, with a global rate of 86%. The report highlights insufficient investigations in war zones and notes that two-thirds of the 189 journalists killed in 2024 and 2025 were in conflict areas. The use of drones in these murders has increased, accounting for 26% of cases. The State of Palestine recorded the highest number of killings, with at least 32 in 2025. Since 2006, 1,641 journalists have been killed worldwide, averaging one death every four days.
