The water democracy follows a path fraught with pitfalls
New water management rules are emerging in the Vilaine basin, affecting Brittany and Pays de la Loire. Despite agricultural opposition, a new water management scheme mandates a phased ban on herbicides for certain corn crops. Approximately 3,000 farms in sensitive areas near vulnerable drinking water sources must comply. The vote, with 45 in favor and 18 against, reflects not only an environmental compromise but also the challenges of local discussions influenced by government interference. Since 1980, 4,600 water sources have been abandoned due to pesticide and nitrate contamination issues, with the government contributing to delays in regulation adoption.
