The million-dollar bill of the floods: they account for almost 80% of the compensation for natural disasters and have already cost Spaniards 11.1 billion.
Spain faces significant economic costs due to flooding, with the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros reporting over €11 billion in indemnities from 2004 to 2025. Floods account for 77.8% of these costs, far exceeding other natural disasters. The most costly event was the October 2024 Dana, which resulted in over €5 billion in compensation. The UME has been increasingly activated for flood rescues, with a record 19 deployments in 2026 alone. The CCS operates as a unique public-private entity, funded by insurance surcharges, to cover damages from large-scale disasters, ensuring compensation for insured property owners.
