The UN now sees it as impossible to limit warming to 1.5 ºC, the goal of the Paris Agreement
The latest UN report indicates that limiting global warming to 1.5°C is no longer feasible, urging countries to minimize emissions duration and magnitude. Immediate action is necessary to mitigate risks associated with exceeding this threshold, including extreme weather and health impacts. Current policies could lead to a 2.8°C increase by 2100, while fulfilling national climate commitments might limit it to 2.6°C. The report emphasizes the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly by 2030, 2035, and 2040 to keep warming as low as possible. Despite challenges, there are opportunities to accelerate climate action through renewable energy adoption and effective policies. However, progress remains insufficient, particularly in phasing out fossil fuels and addressing deforestation.
