The network of expert judges responsible for advising the instructor of Urda in the train tragedy
The recent train disasters in Adamuz and Urda have prompted judicial intervention for investigations and coordination with public services. The General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has protocols in place for handling such large-scale catastrophes, ensuring effective judicial responses. Despite having around 5,500 judges in Spain, only a few handle major catastrophe investigations, often involving young judges. The CGPJ's protocol outlines the organization and coordination of judicial actions during emergencies. The Judicial Network of Experts in Emergency Management assists in these investigations, ensuring specialized knowledge is available. Initial actions include securing evidence and restricting access to disaster sites, as seen in Urda, where the judge has ordered the custody of train black boxes and limited access to the accident area. The CGPJ is also reinforcing its court to focus exclusively on the Urda train accident investigation.
