The energy transition goes through gender equality, but the road is still uphill

An international study led by Cnr-Irpps highlights significant gender disparities in the energy sector, where women remain underrepresented. The research indicates that the transition to sustainable energy is linked to increasing female participation in STEM fields. Conducted through focus groups, the study reveals two main issues: unmet aspirations among students seeking impactful educational paths and a repelling effect due to cultural stereotypes and unwelcoming environments. Current statistics show that only 22% of PhD candidates in computer science and ICT in the EU are women, and in renewable energy, only 32% of workers are female.
