Last ice from glacier on highest mountain peak in Slovenia melted after hot summer

The glacier has significantly shrunk over the past century, with historical records showing it covered about 40 hectares in the mid-19th century. By 1946, it had reduced to 14 hectares, and further measurements indicated a decline to 0.2 hectares by 2023. Recent hot summers accelerated the melting process, leading to the glacier's complete disappearance, confirmed by new photographs. Matija Zorn from the Anton Melik Geographical Institute noted the loss of this glacier as a crucial source of climate change data. Extreme heatwaves have severely impacted the Alps, with Swiss researchers reporting nearly one-fifth of the country's ice lost in the last five years.
