Empty shelves in Italy due to truck drivers' blockades
Truck drivers in southern Italy have been blocking highways and ports for over a week due to rising diesel prices, leading to empty supermarket shelves. Protests began in Apulia and have spread nationwide, affecting major ports like Naples and Gioia Tauro. The price of diesel has increased significantly since February, costing drivers an additional 250 to 400 euros per tank. The government has announced measures, including a billion euros in aid, but no tax cuts, leaving the protests unresolved. Farmers and transport companies have joined the demonstrations, demanding immediate tax relief on agricultural diesel amid rising living costs, leading to unrest in northern Italy as well.
