Leiria: 9.3 million in waste after Kristin

The municipality of Leiria has incurred extraordinary expenses of €9.3 million for waste collection and management due to severe weather conditions. Mayor Gonçalo Lopes highlighted that this amount is primarily due to increased waste collection processes following the Kristin storm in January. The costs include significant expenses related to asbestos removal from damaged structures. Despite the major cleanup efforts, reconstruction continues, leading to ongoing waste generation. Nearly 12,000 tons of waste have been collected from various sites, with additional challenges posed by the destruction caused by storms that resulted in fatalities and extensive property damage.
