Lierde sees tourist overnight stays drop by over 21 percent, but: "we have quite a few assets"
Tourist overnight stays in Lierde decreased by 21.4% from 2023 to 2025, dropping from 6,838 to 5,373. Mayor Jurgen Soetens attributes this decline to the closure of a major B&B and emphasizes Lierde's appeal as a walking and cycling destination. He believes the decrease is a temporary phenomenon and not indicative of reduced tourist interest. Lierde boasts historical sites, including a well-preserved Carthusian monastery, and plans to enhance its tourism appeal through a proposed tourist tax starting in 2027. The aim is to promote the region year-round, not just during cycling events.
