Catch limits in the Baltic Sea. No cuts on bycatch of cod and western herring

The European Commission proposed significant reductions in bycatch limits for three fish stocks, including an 88% cut for western cod. Poland opposed these proposals, resulting in no reductions for bycatch quotas. A total ban on commercial fishing for these species has been in place in the Baltic Sea due to poor stock conditions. In 2027, the allowable catch for central herring will increase by 71%, exceeding the Commission's proposal. The sprat catch limit will rise by 44%, as suggested by the Commission. Poland's quotas for cod and herring remain specified, with exceptions for small boats. The ministers supported maintaining the ban on recreational cod fishing to aid stock recovery.
