Lithuania is considering introducing general conscription due to the Russian threat
Lithuania plans to introduce mandatory military service starting in 2032 due to security tensions with Russia, as announced by President Gitanas Nausėda. The proposal requires parliamentary approval. Lithuania partially reinstated conscription in 2015 in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, concerns have increased in Lithuania, which borders both Russia and Belarus. Currently, over 5,000 young men receive basic military training annually, with plans to increase this number to around 7,500 under the new conscription. Young women can still participate voluntarily, and the transformation costs may reach 120 million euros.
