Wegovy oral arrives in Spain, the first pill from the 'Ozempic family' against obesity

The oral formulation of semaglutide, marketed as Wegovy, is now available in Spain for obesity treatment. This medication, taken daily, shows significant weight loss results compared to placebo. It is not covered by health insurance, costing €236.20 for a monthly supply. The oral version requires specific administration conditions to enhance absorption and is indicated for adults with obesity or overweight with related health issues. Lilly's orforglipron, another oral GLP-1 agonist, is also in the pipeline. Clinical trials indicate that semaglutide oral has a similar efficacy and safety profile to its injectable counterpart, with common side effects being gastrointestinal. Experts believe this new option will benefit patients averse to injections and improve treatment adherence.
