Los Angeles ends oil production in the city

Los Angeles has unanimously approved a measure to ban oil drilling and extraction within the city, addressing long-standing community concerns about pollution. The plan aims to phase out existing oil production over the next 20 years, affecting around 600 active and 1,200 inactive wells. The city council highlighted the historical injustices faced by communities near drilling sites, which pose health risks, especially near sensitive locations like schools and parks. This decision aligns with the county's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035 and follows a previous ban on new drilling approved in March 2022, which was later overturned by a court ruling. The new ban comes after over a decade of advocacy from local residents.
