Cheaper electricity, more expensive gas than in the EU

In the first half of 2026, electricity prices in Portugal were lower than the EU and euro area averages, while natural gas prices were higher for households. According to ERSE, the average electricity cost for domestic consumers was €0.2491 per kWh, compared to €0.2620 in Spain and €0.2882 in the EU, marking a 1.8% decrease year-on-year. Conversely, the average price for natural gas reached €0.1471 per kWh, exceeding the EU average of €0.1378 and Spain's €0.0867, with a slight increase of 0.2% from 2025. For non-domestic consumers, Portugal's prices were also below EU averages for both energy types, with electricity prices down 6.3% and natural gas down 10%. Taxes and fees accounted for 33% of the final electricity price and 31% for natural gas, both higher than EU averages.
