Hungarian authorities detained the head of the central bank from Orbán's era

Hungarian authorities have detained former central bank governor György Matolcsy and others in connection with an investigation into foundations established during his tenure. Matolcsy, who led the bank from 2013 to 2025, is suspected of financial fraud and using forged documents. The prosecution confirmed ongoing coordinated investigations related to significant financial damage caused by breaches of trust. The national bank's leadership previously filed a criminal complaint regarding the devaluation of properties owned by the bank, suspecting mismanagement and abuse of power. A parliamentary committee has been questioning former Fidesz party members about the foundations, with no prior suspicions raised. Reports from the State Audit Office highlighted problematic management of the foundations and significant financial losses.
