Madeira invests in sand replenishment to halt erosion

The Madeira government is investing €2.1 million to combat coastal erosion on Porto Santo Island through dredging and beach nourishment. The project aims to enhance navigability at the harbor while using dredged sediments to reinforce the coastal system. It includes phases for dredging, beach nourishment, and dune reconstruction, with monitoring until 2028. The first phase involves dredging 75,000 cubic meters of sediment, while the second phase will introduce artificial nourishment to a beach section. This initiative is part of a sustainable approach to coastal protection, utilizing scientific knowledge and monitoring to inform future interventions.
