Madeira Ocean. To "see the island" you need to study it: from the flights of the terns to life in the deep Atlantic
The Madeira Ocean program involves a large-scale scientific expedition to study marine areas around Madeira, focusing on biodiversity and pollution. Coordinated by Paulo Oliveira, the initiative includes around 200 participants from various institutions, aiming to gather data for effective marine protection. The expedition, which started on October 2, 2026, includes multiple phases and utilizes advanced technologies for monitoring. Researchers are also assessing human impacts on protected areas, collecting marine debris, and analyzing its sources. Initial findings reveal significant pollution, with 101 kg of waste collected from one site alone, highlighting the need for ongoing conservation efforts.
