Hungary: The NAV may initiate an asset investigation against former and current prime ministers, ministers, representatives, and state secretaries

The Hungarian Parliament approved a proposal allowing the tax authority to investigate the wealth of current and former politicians. This includes members of parliament, ministers, and state secretaries. The aim is to ensure transparency and accountability, with investigations starting two years after a politician's appointment. The tax authority will assess whether their wealth aligns with declared income and assets. If discrepancies arise, further tax audits may be initiated, and potential criminal activities reported to law enforcement. Politicians found with significant tax deficiencies will be publicly listed.
