More than two-thirds of the public guarantee for home purchases used by September
As of September, Portuguese banks utilized 66.5% of the public guarantee for home purchases by young people under 35, according to the Bank of Portugal. This program has facilitated 48,859 contracts totaling €10.25 billion since its inception, accounting for 26% of total contracts and 29.8% of the total amount contracted. In total, 188,017 housing credit contracts were signed nationwide, with young people under 35 signing 104,919 contracts worth €20.92 billion. In September alone, 2,832 contracts were made under this guarantee, representing 31.5% of the number and 35.8% of the amount for housing credit. The guarantee is more prevalent in regions like Alentejo and Beira Baixa, while its use is lower in Greater Lisbon and Madeira. The public guarantee applies to contracts signed until the end of 2026, allowing young buyers to secure up to 100% of the property's value.
