More than one in three medical students are considering emigrating

A study reveals that over one-third of medical students in Portugal are considering emigration, primarily due to unsatisfactory working conditions and salaries in the National Health Service (SNS). The research, conducted by the National Association of Medical Students (ANEM), indicates that nearly half of the respondents prioritize improvements in work-life balance and salary. The president of ANEM, Maria Fontão, emphasizes the need for incentives to attract doctors to specialties facing shortages. While many students still view SNS as a career option, they express concerns about bureaucratic burdens and limited patient interaction. The study highlights the importance of addressing these issues to retain medical professionals in Portugal.
