Malta plans to raise tourist fees. The cost of stay may increase
In 2027, Malta plans to significantly increase certain tourist fees, as announced by Finance Minister Clyde Caruana during budget discussions. The ecological fee, currently €1.50 per adult per night, may rise to €8 for hotels and €10 for short-term rentals, with maximum caps of €64 and €80 respectively. This could lead to an increase of approximately 350 PLN per person for stays of eight nights. The fee applies to all guests in licensed accommodations, including locals, and is expected to generate €182 million annually for the tourism sector. Additionally, a new €5 fee for visiting Comino may be introduced for foreign tourists, alongside increased ferry ticket prices to Gozo. These proposed hikes have raised concerns among tourism representatives about Malta's competitiveness.
