"Historic milestone" for nurses in pregnancy

The Sindicato dos Enfermeiros (SE) hailed the approval of low-risk pregnancy monitoring by specialist nurses as a historic milestone. A new regulation allows these nurses to oversee prenatal care, apply clinical protocols, and request diagnostic tests. This initiative aims to address the shortage of family medicine specialists and ensure timely prenatal access. The program will operate within primary healthcare settings and will be evaluated after one year. The SE emphasizes that collaborative models for low-risk pregnancy monitoring have proven effective in other European countries.
