Masked youths vandalized downtown Barcelona
On Saturday night, a group of around 500 masked youths vandalized central Barcelona, responding to social media calls. They damaged vehicles, public furniture, and looted over a dozen shops. The Mossos d'Esquadra police deployed more than 220 riot officers, arresting over 100 individuals, a quarter of whom were minors. Barcelona's mayor, Jaume Collboni, condemned the violence, stating it would not go unpunished and emphasized accountability for parents of minors involved. The unrest is linked to ongoing protests in Spain over housing issues, sparked by the eviction of an elderly woman. Similar protests are occurring in Portugal and France, where demonstrations have also turned violent.
