From today, companies that pollute the environment can receive a gigafine
A new government decree in Hungary, effective from October 25, raises environmental fines for companies with annual revenues exceeding 100 million HUF. The maximum fine is set at 5% of the previous year's net revenue, with stricter penalties for repeat offenders. The previous cap of 500 million HUF for waste management fines is abolished, while the maximum for individuals remains at 50 million HUF. The Ministry of Environment emphasizes that these fines are not taxes but penalties for violations, aiming to ensure fair competition among compliant businesses. The changes primarily target industries with significant environmental impacts, such as battery manufacturing and energy production.
