ECOWAS mediator assesses in Guinea-Bissau the postponement of elections

The Senegalese foreign minister, Cheikh Niang, is visiting Guinea-Bissau to discuss a new date for the postponed general elections. His meetings will include key political and military leaders, as well as representatives from political parties and civil society. The current political situation has led to concerns about the feasibility of holding elections as planned, with the electoral calendar at risk. Following a military coup in November 2025, a transitional government was established, and new elections were scheduled for December 6. The country has faced ongoing political instability since its independence in 1974.
