MediaMarkt and Saturn with a Chinese owner. The European Commission has issued a conditional approval
JD.com submitted an offer to acquire MediaMarkt's owner for €2.2 billion in July 2025. The European Commission is investigating the deal for potential competition disruption due to state aid regulations. These rules allow the Commission to scrutinize acquisitions by companies that received significant financial support from non-EU states within three years prior to the transaction. The Commission noted that JD.com received support from the Chinese government, including loans and subsidies. Consequently, the acquisition is approved under the condition that JD.com implements measures for ten years to ensure fair competition. Both parties must maintain fair dealings and provide services to third parties on equal terms to prevent unfair advantages.
