They showed what the Great Plain looked like two hundred years ago
Researchers from ELTE have reconstructed the historical landscape of the Great Plain using historical maps, modern photos, drone images, and artificial intelligence. They provided extensive scientific data to ensure topographical accuracy in the generated images. The project highlights significant changes in the region due to river regulation and land drainage, which transformed the Tisza River and its floodplains. The area, once rich in wetlands and forests, has seen a drastic reduction in natural habitats due to agricultural development. This method not only illustrates the past but also aids in understanding the potential outcomes of wetland restoration and landscape changes due to drying.
