"They killed us" – Novaya Gazeta, the largest independent Russian newspaper, is closing down

Novaja Gazeta announced it will cease operations on November 9 due to government pressure and funding withdrawal. The newspaper, which has been active for 29 years, faced increasing restrictions, including being labeled a foreign agent and losing its revenue sources. The closure coincides with the shutdown of the Anna Politkovskaya museum, located at the same address. Editor Sergey Sokolov highlighted the challenges faced since the Ukraine war began, including the confiscation of their printing press and the designation of staff as foreign agents. The Russian Ministry of Justice justified the foreign agent status by claiming the newspaper spread unreliable information.
