The traditional Austrian motorway sticker will be abolished, replaced by an electronic system

Starting December 1, Austria will replace its traditional highway sticker system with an electronic payment method linked to vehicle registration numbers. This change comes as a response to the declining popularity of physical stickers, with 83% of the 4.4 million annual permits sold this year being electronic. Users will still have options for short-term and annual electronic permits available online and through apps. However, the cost of using Austrian roads will increase, with annual electronic permits rising to €108.9 and daily permits to €9.8. A survey indicated mixed feelings about the change, with some viewing it as an improvement and others as forced digitalization. The decision to eliminate physical stickers was made last year, aiming to reduce administrative burdens.
