One of the last independent Russian newspapers, Novaya Gazeta, is shutting down

Novaja Gazeta, one of the last independent Russian newspapers, will cease operations due to government restrictions. Founded in 1993, it was labeled a foreign agent in September 2022. The newspaper announced it will shut down on November 9, 2023, after being forced to vacate its office. The publication has faced significant challenges, including losing its media license and being accused of failing to submit ownership documents. Dmitry Muratov, its Nobel Prize-winning editor, described the situation as a political assassination. The closure also affects a museum dedicated to journalist Anna Politkovskaya. Many staff members have left Russia since the Ukraine war began, launching Novaja Gazeta Europe, which was later deemed undesirable by authorities.
