Meloni: Anyone participating in a violent protest could face five years in prison

The Italian government has introduced new measures to prevent violence, criminalizing participation in violent protests. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that offenders could face up to five years in prison and fines of up to 20,000 euros. She condemned the recent riots in Milan and other cities, emphasizing that destruction is a crime, not a form of protest. Meloni highlighted the need for swift investigations into crimes and strict enforcement of security laws. The government aims to protect peaceful protesters while deploying 500 soldiers to assist police in Milan. New preventive measures will also apply to youths aged 14 to 18, allowing authorities to detain identified violent protesters before future demonstrations. Additionally, fines imposed on minors will be the responsibility of their parents if they cannot pay.
