Meloni says preventive detention to apply to minors too

Italy's Premier Giorgia Meloni announced that preventive detention for suspected troublemakers will now include minors. This decision follows recent riots in Milan and other cities. Previously, the state had to prove that youths aged 14 to 18 understood their actions. The new decree shifts this burden, establishing a presumption of understanding unless proven otherwise. Additionally, pretrial detention, which was only applicable to adults, will now also apply to minors, effective immediately.
