Menos mortes na estrada, mas ainda longe da meta
Portugal has seen a 6% decrease in road fatalities in 2025 compared to the previous year, but remains among the worst in Europe with 578 deaths. The country ranks fifth in road mortality rates, trailing behind Latvia, Croatia, Romania, and Bulgaria. Despite a general decline in EU road deaths, achieving the EU's goal of halving fatalities by 2030 seems unlikely for Portugal, which aims to reduce deaths from 626 in 2019 to 313. Current statistics show 409 deaths this year, indicating a challenging path ahead. Authorities are urged to identify accident-prone areas and implement new road safety measures, including a revised Highway Code and increased police presence.
