Capacity market: Terna sets auction for 2028 on December 21. Here’s how it works and who can participate
Terna has announced that the next capacity market auction for 2028 will take place on December 21, following a decree from the Ministry of Environment. Participation requests can be submitted until November 3. The capacity market allows Terna to secure long-term supply contracts through competitive auctions, involving both production units and demand-response resources. The last auction in February 2025 allocated approximately 43 GW, contributing to the closure of less efficient plants and the introduction of new capacity. Derating rates have been adjusted to reflect increased storage capacity, with changes for batteries and solar capacity.
