Meta sentenced in New Mexico to pay $25 billion for privacy

A judge in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay $25 billion for misleading users about its privacy practices. The lawsuit, initiated in 2021 following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, claimed that Meta deceived users regarding privacy statements. Last month, a jury found that Meta committed 43 million violations of New Mexico's consumer protection laws, resulting in a penalty of $5,000 for each violation.
