Meta ordered to pay 25 billion dollars to New Mexico for deceiving users

Meta has been ordered to pay 25 billion dollars to New Mexico for misleading users about the use of their personal data. Judge Francis Mathew emphasized that Facebook's conduct was unlawful and systematic. Attorney General Raúl Torrez stated that this is one of the largest state penalties against Meta in the U.S. The case arose from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where data from millions of users was obtained without consent. New Mexico was the only state to sue Meta, while other states settled their cases with a 459 million dollar agreement. The total fine could increase by 3.75 billion dollars per year until payment is made, with the funds allocated to education.
