Meta fined $25 billion for lies about customer data usage
The case stems from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, involving data misuse during the 2016 Trump campaign. New Mexico prosecutors accused Meta of misleading users about data access by third parties. A jury found that 26 out of 29 statements made by Meta were deceptive, with over 43 million violations of state consumer protection laws. An attorney stated that the court must penalize Meta financially. New Mexico has previously won lawsuits against Meta, including a recent ruling requiring the company to pay $567 million for harm to young users.
