International Criminal Court awarded by the European Parliament

The nomination of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the Sakharov Prize was supported by social democrats as a defense of international order against U.S. sanctions. They argued that the ICC has faced political pressure and unjust accusations from the U.S. administration. The decision was announced by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, during a session in Strasbourg. Other nominees included Tanzanian opposition lawyer Tundu Lissu and Iranian sisters Taraneh and Romina Rahimi. The ICC's president, Tomoko Akane, highlighted the challenges faced by the court, including sanctions aimed at hindering its judicial mandate. Recently, Navi Pillay, a prominent lawyer associated with the ICC, received the Nobel Peace Prize, coinciding with new U.S. sanctions against the court.
