Why was György Matolcsy sent behind bars? We explain the details of the 200 billion forint asset rescue operation

The Hungarian Central Prosecutor's Office has detained György Matolcsy, former head of the National Bank of Hungary, based on allegations of significant economic fraud. The case revolves around the transfer of ownership of a key investment firm linked to the bank, which allegedly resulted in substantial financial losses. Matolcsy's last working day at the bank coincided with the registration of a new owner for the Optima Investment Fund Management Company, which was previously under the bank's control. This maneuver reportedly aimed to transfer control of the foundation's assets to Matolcsy and his family. The prosecutor's office claims that the actions led to a financial disadvantage exceeding 500 million HUF. Matolcsy's son, Ádám, has not responded to inquiries regarding his father's situation, while Stofa György, involved in the ownership transfer, has been linked to multiple companies managing real estate businesses associated with the bank.
