Miguel Gomes wants to film housing protests
Filmmakers Miguel Gomes and Filipa Reis have requested permission from the Lisbon City Council to film housing rights protests, including encampments at Rossio. This footage will be included in Gomes' upcoming film, Selvajaria, which is inspired by Euclides da Cunha's Os Sertões and is set to be completed by spring 2027. The film addresses themes of resistance against authoritarianism, paralleling recent peaceful protests in Lisbon and Porto advocating for housing rights. The city council's response to the request is pending. Recently, the National Aeronautical Authority prohibited drone use during protests, a decision later reversed after media coverage. Many cultural figures have supported the protests, signing an open letter condemning violence in Porto and Lisbon.
