Millions of Poles need to check the date on their ID. High cost for delaying the exchange
In Poland, every adult must have a valid ID card. As of early 2026, over 3.6 million people will have IDs expiring within a year, including those born in 1988 and 1998. It's advised to apply for a new ID at least 30 days before expiration at any municipal office, bringing a completed application, the expiring ID, and a recent photo. Photo requirements vary based on application method. If applying online, a visit to the office is needed within 30 days for biometric data. Failure to renew can result in fines up to 5,000 PLN or restrictions on freedom. Changes in residence or personal details do not require a new ID.
