Millions are at risk, 319 Chrome extensions have revealed something very concerning
A recent discovery revealed that 13.4 million downloads of malicious Google Chrome extensions redirect user searches to generate revenue for attackers via Bing and Yahoo. Researcher John Tuckner identified 57 dangerous extensions in April 2025, which modify the default search engine and route searches through proxy servers linked to attackers. Although the list of 319 problematic extensions is extensive, users are advised to check their installed extensions against the Socket report. Many of these extensions, including PDF converters and AI tools, bypassed Android Play Store filters, using names and logos of trusted services like Google Chrome and WhatsApp. While generating revenue from user searches is concerning, Tuckner warns that attackers could shift to more harmful activities, such as data theft, making it crucial to remove these extensions promptly.
