Minimum tax generates nearly half a billion for the treasury in one year

In 2024, multinationals paid 449 million euros in minimum tax in the Netherlands, following the introduction of this tax. The expectation was that it would generate around 466 million euros annually. Over 140 countries agreed that if multinationals pay less than 15% tax on profits, the country can impose additional taxes to reach that threshold. So far, 200 multinationals have paid this tax, but the amount may increase due to extended deadlines and potential objections from companies. Notably, 129 million euros were paid because companies in the Netherlands paid too little tax themselves. The future revenue from this tax is uncertain, especially as more countries implement similar measures. The U.S. has an exception for its multinationals, complicating the situation further. Overall, the global minimum tax could yield between 70 and 98 billion euros annually.
