Mozambique. Armed violence has caused 1.3 million displaced people since 2017
Since 2017, approximately 1.3 million people have been internally displaced in Mozambique due to armed insurgency in the north, with over 26,000 new displacements reported in the first half of 2026. The UNHCR highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by persistent attacks in Cabo Delgado, a gas-rich province. Many displaced individuals have faced multiple displacements, and the security situation remains fragile. The UNHCR has provided various forms of assistance, including legal support and humanitarian aid, while launching a project to enhance civil documentation systems. A financial appeal of $61.3 million for operations in Mozambique and Angola has seen only 38% funding by June 2026.
